How is Cooper Academy different?
Step into an environment where learning comes to life!

Implementing the International Baccalaureate
Middle Years Programme

Picture
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an international educational framework that is represented in more than 17o countries. It consists of 3 programmes, the Primary Years Programme (Kinder-5th grade), the Middle Years Programme (6th-10th grade), and the Diploma Programme (11th-12th grade).

Cooper Academy is proud to be implementing grades 6-8 of the Middle Years Programme. We are excited to be going through authorization in the Spring of 2014.

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme promotes a philosophy that:
Promotes responsible global citizenship, while preparing students for their future as members of a global society.
Provides inter-cultural awareness for students and staff.
Focuses on challening academics
Facilitates communication for the development of interdisciplinary, thematic instruction, so students connect what they learn.
Calls for students to develop higher level thinking skills, as well as important life skills.
Provides assessment criteria, as well as moderation of assessment

International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) Mission
The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

IBO MYP Curriculum
Within the Middle Years Programme, students are expected to participate in eight subjects. These eight subjects are to occur in each year of the child's academic experience:

Language A (Language Arts)
Language B (Foreign language)
Technology (Design Cycle)
Humanities (Social Studies)
Physical Education/HealthSciences
Arts (Visual, dramatic, & musical)
Mathematics

In order to awaken the intelligence of students and teach them to connect school subjects with the world outside, the Middle Years Program (IBMYP) is based upon five overarching themes. These themes are called the Areas of Interaction and are used to connect all eight subjects of the Middle Years Programme.  These five Areas of Interaction are central components which need to be understood by all teachers, students and administrators in the IBMYP schools.

Areas of Interaction:
Approaches to Learning (ATL) - Study skills and fostering the learning process (helping the students learn how to learn). Community and Service - Each year in grades six through eight
Health and Social Education - mental and physical health
Environments - the interdependence of humans and nature
Human Ingenuity - the creative and inventive genius of humans and their impact on society and the human mind
